Popularity is not a numbers game
As I thought about this weeks Illustration Friday prompt 'popularity' I couldn't help but think of a conversation I had with a grade 11 class about Facebook. I asked how many students had it; all of them. How many checked it every day; all of them. How many had 'friends' they had never met; all of them. How many had over 500 'friends'; all of them. Why do they have it; to see how popular I am. This is how young people gauge popularity. Many of my students have over 1000 'friends' 1000!
I wanted to draw something that incorporated these ideas but something else stuck in my head.
I was never popular.
When I was a kid, my best mate was Paul.
I didn't care. Popularity is not a numbers game.
(if I get chance I'll scan and fix up image... this was a photo taken and of my sketchbook)

Wow - that's scary re kids on Facebook! And you're right - all you need is one really good friend... :)
we bloggers are the same aren't we. checking our stats, followers... daily. popularity doesn't have an expiration date unfortunately.
very true
thank you for your comments
it's such a different way of thinking, isn't it? I remember coming home from school and drawing or playing guitar until it was time to turn in. Now it's a log-in/log-on culture that needs to be socializing for the entire time. No time for introspection and self-development. A few good friends are all I needed, too.
... and when you wanted to hang out with a mate, you went to their house and knocked... or ask a girl out, you rang her home, and if her dad answered, you talked to him!
That thought terrifies my 'text' students
