A performance poem on bullying for The National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence, Friday 18th March 2011. This is written from the point of view of a teacher who was bullied as a student and sees the same problems in his own students.
We have to 'see' bullying
We have to 'see' the victims
and 'see' the bullies themselves
and we have to speak out

This has hit a very raw place for me today, it all rings true, although my experience of being bullied is being excluded, left out, run away from, the emotional torture girls seem so good at, and still 33 years later it haunts me. Now, I'm faced with it again with my youngest son who has Dyslexia coming home in an emotional mess. I have just pulled him out of school and am teaching at home till I find a school that will deal with learning difficulties and the bullies that can make a childs life a living hell.
I'm so sorry to read your comment there Kylie. It's hard to help young people see that there is an 'after school' where, in the main, the rules are different. But then, school is often their whole world so we also need to help them live it safely and healthily. I wish you and your family all the very best... take care.
My being bullied in school was the main contributing reason why I've homeschooled my children. As my oldest prepares to enter high school next week, a part of me is still that 12 yr old, being chased - but my eyes are wide open for my son, to make sure he knows that I see HIM - and I will help him if it happens. My mother never knew.
Dawn your children are very lucky to have a mother like you, I wish you and your family all the best
