Illustration Friday: Afterwards

"All good books are alike in that they are truer than
if they had really happened and after you are finished
reading one you will feel that all that happened
to you and afterwards it all belongs to you;
the good and the bad, the ecstasy, the remorse"
Ernest Hemingway

The Famous Five ruined me as a child. I loved reading those stories but afterwards I was always deeply disappointed that the house I lived  in had no secret passages, that I didn't own an island and that smugglers didn't try to hide gold in the garden shed!
Was a small crimewave too much to ask for?!

I copied the picture  (6B pencil, freehand) and the text from an old Famous Five anthology I found in my mum's attic on a recent trip to England. I can't wait to share those adventures with my own children. The coloured image (ink, photoshop) is part of a present I'm working on for my sister - I just thought the pose fit quite well... kind of a 'wait for me! I'm coming!'

A sign of a goog book is when you have a sense of loss when you put the book down.

I wanted my own island also :(

Love the concept for the illustration Alex, super illustration.

I just knew that our house had a secret passage.... never did find it... and got in trouble for pulling the panelling away from the wall ;o) Very imaginative and cool concept Alex. God bless!

I did not read the Famous Five, but I chose a Hemingway quote too...I did not post my "masterpiece" yet. I like your stories. I will take a fiction writing course next year. can't wait to see what I come up with.

I loved Famous Five! Loved them love them... and other Enid Blyton's books too, like the Adventure and Circus series.

thanks everyone, I love revisiting books I read as a child...

it's interesting to see how they've consciously or subconsciously affected our lives... seems all of us were looking for a little adventure!

I did actually rip up the carpet and pry a floorboard up to hide things in my room... not that I had anything to hide in it!

Thank you for your comments

Books are cool like that, they're best for sucking you into an adventure... just one more paragraph... one more page.. one more chapter ;)

Your edits to the text cracked me up :D

Love the image, was unbelievably addicted to the famous five as a kid - had a crush on Georgina - and also gutted no adventures ever occurred to me ... also never had picnics with buncakes and lashings of ginger beer ....
